Death Toll from Indonesia Train Crash Hits Fourteen
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin disclosed the updated casualty figures in an official statement, saying: "The latest data as of 8:45 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) shows 14 deaths. The deceased has been taken to the Kramat Jati Police Hospital for further identification. Meanwhile, 84 injured victims have received medical treatment at various health facilities."
The disaster unfolded Monday evening at approximately 8:50 p.m. local time, when a commuter train operating on the Jakarta-Bekasi route slammed into a long-distance train running the Jakarta-Surabaya corridor — two of Indonesia's busiest rail lines.
Scores of survivors were dispersed across multiple medical facilities for treatment, according to Rasyidin.
Both the national rail operator KAI and Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee have launched parallel investigations into the cause of the collision. No official findings have been released.
The incident is among the deadliest rail accidents to strike Indonesia in recent years, renewing scrutiny over the safety standards of the country's rapidly expanding passenger rail network.
