Indonesia Train Crash Leaves Over Dozen Dead

(MENAFN) At least 14 people are dead and 84 others wounded after two trains collided in Bekasi, West Java, state media reported Tuesday — marking one of Indonesia's most devastating rail disasters in recent memory.

The crash unfolded late Monday at East Bekasi Station, when a commuter train and a long-distance train violently collided, according to a news agency. Dozens of survivors were rushed to multiple hospitals, where they continued receiving treatment Tuesday.

KAI spokesperson Franoto Wibowo said the chain of events was triggered when a taxi struck an electric commuter train at the Bulak Kapal railway crossing in Bekasi, according to media. The impact brought the commuter train to a sudden halt on the tracks — directly in the path of an oncoming long-distance train traveling the same line, which then slammed into the stranded carriages.

Officials from state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) confirmed that rescue teams, including personnel from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), worked through the night to extract victims, with some requiring specialized medical attention. The bodies of those killed have been transported to a police hospital for formal identification.

Authorities pledged full coverage of all medical and funeral expenses for those affected. Emergency response centers and family information posts have since been established to support relatives seeking news of loved ones.

Train services across the affected corridor remain partially suspended as investigators work to determine the precise sequence of failures that led to the collision. Indonesia's transport authorities confirmed the rescue and recovery operation is still active, with further official updates expected in the coming hours.
